Croydon Secures £1.79 Million to Improve Roads and Transport Links

Croydon Council has secured £1.79 million in funding from Transport for London (TfL) to improve road safety, create safer pedestrian crossings and deliver better transport connections across the borough.

The investment will support improvements around schools, more reliable bus journeys and enhanced cycling routes, with projects prioritised for delivery during the current financial year as part of the council’s revised Local Implementation Plan (LIP).

The £1.79m funding will support part of Croydon's programme of transport improvements for this financial year, as Croydon and TfL continue to work constructively and positively together.

The Council resubmitted an updated LIP after the Mayoral elections at TfL’s request. This provided an opportunity to refine the programme so that it better reflects local priorities.

The programme will fund a range of improvements, including safer pedestrian crossings, making roads safer outside schools, road safety improvements on Portland Road, new cycle routes linking parks and neighbourhoods, more cycle parking and improvements to bus journeys. Together these schemes will help make it safer and easier for residents to get around Croydon and to use public transport.

The updated programme places a stronger emphasis on delivering transport improvements that respond to local priorities. This includes improving the highway network, tackling congestion and reliability issues, enhancing road safety at targeted locations, improving bus performance, making key transport hubs more accessible, and delivering walking and cycling routes where they are most appropriate.

Community feedback has helped shape the revised programme, with an emphasis on schemes that improve safety and accessibility whilst keeping Croydon moving. The revised allocation is lower than the amount originally sought, reflecting the time remaining to complete schemes within this financial year. The Council and TfL will continue working together on future investment programmes.

The LIP funding is in addition to the Council’s £17.58m being invested in highways for roads, footways, bridges and flood‑management, which will help keep the borough safe, reliable and resilient.

Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon, said:

“Residents deserve safer roads, reliable buses and transport schemes that work for their neighbourhoods. When residents and businesses raise concerns about a scheme, I will listen and press for those concerns to be addressed.

“Supporting walking and cycling goes hand in hand with tackling congestion and keeping Croydon moving. We have worked constructively with TfL to agree £1.79m for practical improvements, including safer crossings, road safety measures outside schools, better bus journeys and cycling routes connecting our communities.

“This funding comes alongside the Council’s £17.58m investment in roads, pavements, bridges and flood management. My commitment is to secure investment that responds to local priorities and makes everyday journeys safer and easier. We will continue working with TfL to deliver those improvements whilst standing up for Croydon’s residents and businesses.”
